Issues:

Quality of Life for our Seniors

It has been a tough time for Ohioans and Americans as the Republican corruption scandals engulf our state and nation. Thanks to the Republican leadership, it has been a tough time for my parents, Dick and Rita McCann. After years of raising the family, they have had to struggle with the healthcare mess made by Republican leadership at the state and federal level. Now is the time for honest reform and for change.

Not only have they had to struggle, the McCann kids have had to spend most of 2005 reversing the decline of Dick and Rita, in their health and financial conditions. During a time of tremendous need for the citizens of our state and country the Republican leadership has continued to let us down. After a lifetime of service as an independent insurance agent, and as a co-founder of Recreation Unlimited, my dad Dick McCann deserves more than the decline that the Ohio economy has given him. He deserves more than the confusing and unhelpful health care that is available to Rita under Ohio's Republican leadership. Now is the time for honest reform and for change.

The prescription regimen and the adapting to growing old is hard enough, while the Republicans spend billions on a war in Iraq and rare coin investments people like my parents suffer because of a lack of funds for healthcare. Now is the time for honest reform and for change

Dick and Rita relied on the government to protect them against insurance companies, big pharmaceutical companies and incompetent doctors. For example, if you have successfully lived an active life since a triple-bypass, yet take blood- thinning medications, forget being covered for Medicare supplemental insurance in Ohio!

The "tort reform" that was passed by the legislature was nothing more than a big, wet, kiss to the insurance companies in Ohio. It should have been called, and I will call it: "The denial of damages Act." Greedy insurance companies, heartless healthcare managers and incompetent doctors must be stopped. The system must change and we need citizens who will step up and fight for the middle class citizens who want honest reform and for change.

I have been a candidate for public office in the past and was the Endorsed Democrat for State Representative in 2004 against Jim Hughes. When our elected officials do not stand up and fight for middle class families they should not be in office. I am running not only for Dick and Rita but also for your family!

We all look in the mirror everyday and ask what could I have done to avoid this crisis from happening? Fortunately for Dick and Rita, all of us kids are highly motivated, well-connected, type-A professionals who can somehow manage to navigate the complex and bewildering world of medical care, or lack thereof, in Ohio. But what about those parents who aren't so blessed? What about those parents whose kids are so overwhelmed with the demands of working to earn a living wage that they cannot spend the hours upon hours of negotiations with doctors, lawyers, and insurance companies. What about those parents-- productive citizens at one time, who are at the mercy of heartless insurance companies? Who can figure this out? Who can take time off to drive them to appointments? What is to be done? Show us the money!

I have decided that the only way to effect change is to fight for it. I will not allow anyone else go through the experience that I have gone through. I will not allow the powerful to step on those who do not have representation. I have been there. My parents and brothers and sisters fight is your fight. The time has come that we stand up and protect our families from the corruption, greed, and incompetence of the Republican leadership.

I ask you to join with me to speak out as an advocate for our aging parents. I ask you to support a candidate who understands the hard work it takes to make the quality of life for our seniors a life with dignity and compassion. I ask you to help the voters of the 22nd Ohio house district, our neighborhood understand that the concerns of a good life are not only for an excellent education, when young, meaningful living wages for honest work when adults, but a dignified life when old.
